What's the catch? Zip. Zero. Nada. Duo's job is to help protect you, not to mess with your stuff. We can't spy on you or wipe your phone, and we won't drain your data plan.
Why DUO MFA?
Your network credentials provide access to email, the TRU Employee portal, Moodle, Microsoft Cloud Services (including Office, Teams and OneDrive) and other network resources.
In December 2020, over 17 unsuspecting TRU employees opened a malicious email message, clicked on a scam link and provided their user credentials to a fake website. The bad actors then used these credentials to send spam all over the world, which resulted in over 60 hours of IT work cleaning the servers and fixing TRU’s reputation. This also prevented communication to students from Faculty.
Multi-factor Authentication provides a second layer of security, requiring you to have your password AND a second form of authentication, like the Duo Mobile Application. This can protect user logins even if usernames and passwords are stolen.
Thompson Rivers University will be using the free DUO mobile application to double up on security. More information on how to install the Duo mobile app on your device is available at https://www.tru.ca/its/infosecurity/mfa.html
Below is the tentative schedule that the Information Security Office will be using to connect Administration and CUPE Staff to Duo.
Faculty will be connected later in 2021.
