Changes to TRU Switchboard

  Posted on: January 12, 2017

Callers to the main Thompson Rivers University number (250-828-5000) will be greeted by a new automated attendant system familiar at many other organizations.

Callers with a touch phone can dial an extension or select a number representing one of the most frequently called areas of the university—programs, academic advising, the bookstore or IT Services (ITS) among others. The automated attendant system also enables callers to access the phone directory by typing in a name.

Call volume to TRU’s switchboard has diminished significantly in recent years, from upwards of a thousand calls per day to an average of 140 per day. Callers are more likely to access TRU’s online directory before contacting the university through the switchboard.

Currently during the day, if callers press 9 to call the attendant, they will be assisted by the Enrolment Services Officers.

ITS has been testing the system since September and has worked with the campus services that receive the most calls to develop the message that greets callers and to determine the menu choices that will best serve callers to TRU.

Some callers may not listen to the options and will press any number to talk to someone. This will require a lookup on the TRU telephone book (Find A Person http://www.tru.ca/contact.html) and transfer to appropriate person or department.

Please advise ITS of any concerns or issues that you may have regarding the system by calling the IT Service Desk at 250-852-6800 or email itservicedesk@tru.ca.
